my gift, my passion, my purpose.

I am sitting here thinking about all of the amazing things that happened in May and I am not even sure where to start.  So many firsts for me.  I heard something today: It is hard to remember days but we have an easier time remembering moments.

FullSizeRender-21I look back at all of my photos and each and every one brings a smile to my face or warms my heart for what happened in that given moment.  In the beginning of May, I spent a Friday night singing to Children in the Cancer Center at our local hospital.  The minute I started singing, there was a certain calmness and joy for this patient (photo above).

“I see usually that they start to smile, maybe sometimes they’ll even eat when we couldn’t get them to eat before,” Joan Jarosz, a pediatric nurse said. “Or they’ll start to play.”   This little guy was having his birthday.  He was adorable.  He was really quiet and calm when I was there (pictured on the left). His sister is holding him.  His Mom told me that he really liked me.  He just stared in to my eyes when I sang to him.  He also really liked my hair.

One of the most touching  moments of the night, was singing to a high school student that would be missing his last concert over that weekend.  I was also a little nervous because he too is a singer.  He had a lot of people in his room, of all ages.  When I asked him what type of music he wanted to hear, he said he likes classic rock.  Ummm, I haven’t done that yet.  So I looked around the room and decided to do Fly me to the moon.  I mean its classic!  He loved it and his parents, grandparents, family and friends were overjoyed as well.  He let me pick the next song, he told me to sing my favorite song.  He had the biggest smile.  He thanked me over and over and told me I made his day, weekend.  I had restored his spirits.

On my way out I stopped in the lobby for a few songs.  People seemed really touched. They would stop, listen, smile and some even cried.  They were on their way in or out as they just visited a loved one or were on their way home.  People started recording me and asking who I was.  I was on the NEWS, although we never did see it.  We had calls as far away as California telling us they watched the story.  All of those moments were amazing.  Truly amazing.  I am really starting to discover that my voice is allowing me to really make people happy.

I won the ePIFany Now-Pay it Forward award.  With the support of my friends, family, community and school I was able to raise money for my classmate that is battling Luekimia and ePIFany Now gifted my school $1000 for a kindness inititive.

18301335_10154261541751256_4007002955250366544_nI will be brainstorming with my principal to put those dollars to use and help create more kindness on campus.

I am so lucky at such a young age that I have discovered my passion, gift and purpose.  I really hope to use my voice to lift the spirits of others and to help raise funds for those that are in need of a little extra help. I have raised thousands of dollars to help people with medical expenses but most of all, I have made a lot of people happy.  Kindness is free.  Take something that you are good at or passionate about and share it. If you like to read, read to children or the elderly.  If you like to dance, teach others to dance. If you like to draw, create art and sell it for a cause.  My mom’s friend Barb Monette told me I inspired her to use her gift of painting to help raise money for others.  Use your gift to inspire someone or lift their spirits.

My vocal coach is still recovering.  I miss him. I hope someday we can work together again.  This year has caused me to really step out of my comfort zone.  I am quiet, except when I sing.  This has been something I have been trying to work on.  When my vocal coach found out he had cancer, things changed for me.  I started performing with a purpose.  That is when I really started to put myself out there and perform to help with his medical expenses.  Then I was nominated for a kindness award, then I began to sing to the children.  I now know and feel like I am doing this for a reason.  I didn’t know my classmate before I started raising money for her, but she will have a friend in me forever. I had an ephifany and I am so excited to follow this path.

I did it, I got on a stage for two hours and sang by myself. I think my vocal coach, Mr. Gregg would be very proud.

It was really fun. The coffee shop sells t-shirts that have “alter-ego” names and the day that I was singing, I was Tisha.

Now I am back to Kanin Elizabeth. I like it. Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram at Kanin Elizabeth for my daily/weekly moments (smile).

Some photos of my photo shoot in NYC. Thank you for following my journey. As my mom says, its not a day trip…its a journey.

Big dreams, big heart.

So…I found myself in the city,  New York City!  See that pink suitcase?  It is filled with shoes.  I had my first professional shoot in NYC and I had to be ready.

IMG_1815My shoot was with Michael Webber, yes thee Michael Webber.  He was fun, he made me feel comfortable and he played great music. This was the first time that I had a stylist with hair and make-up team.  It will be at least a month until my photo’s are ready but I will share a few when they are available.  I had a sit down with my agency after my shoot. I wont officially be available for bookings until my photos are ready and my comp card is complete. A comp card is a card that shows several different photos of yourself to show how versatile your look can be.  We really discussed in detail what I wanted to do and wFullSizeRender-7hat I was comfortable with. My talent manager Talia, was super nice and down to earth. Talia really shared how the industry worked and what I could expect moving forward and if this is not what I was expecting I can exit at anytime. I am glad that I will have the opportunity to explore the industry as I work on my singing.  On Friday, (the next day) I spent a little time in a recording studio. KIDZ SPARKLE is a new kids App that is launching. It is a place for kids (3-13) to go and sing. It is a platform for any level. A safe place that allows kids to develop their skills and also compete for prizes. I will be featured soon. Please follow me, and vote if I need votes (smile).

I need your HELP! Meet the Nominations of the 2017 Y-PIF Award!

It’s ME, guys…it’s ME! I am a finalist for the 2017 Y-Pif Award. FullSizeRender-8What does that mean? I was nominated by Miss Andrea Billups. Miss Andrea nominated me for trying to raise money for my vocal coach that is recovering from cancer. I started singing to raise money for his medical expenses.  Now that I am a finalist, I need your help. I need your vote! I talked to Mr Gregg’s wife, Miss Robin and we have decided that the money we raise this time around will go to a classmate of mine that was just diagnosed with cancer. A Fifth grader at Herbison Woods in Dewitt was just diagnosed with this awful disease. Every vote is $1. So I am asking for your vote. I do not keep any of it. 100% of the funds will go to my classmate regardless if I win. If I win, my school will receive $1000. Here is where you can vote! It only takes $1.

Pledge $1 (1 vote) $5 (5 votes) any amount (10, 20, 100 sky’s the limit) . Lets come together and help my classmate.

I will personally be Thanking you all! I have to give a big shout-out to Barb Monette. Barb  reached out to me and said that I inspired her to use her talent to help. Barb is an amazing Artist. Barb started painting and raised money for Mr. Gregg on her own. Complete strangers went to his Go-Fund me page and started donating. What a blessing you are. Thank you Miss Andrea for nominating me. It was through your eyes that I get to help one more person and I have the opportunity to gift money to my school.

I have reached out to the Sparrow Foundation and I will start singing to the kids at the Children’s Center. I am hoping by sharing my voice with the children staying at the hospital, that I can lift their spirits.

Please join me on MAY 7th. I will report back to the event on my time with the kids and hopefully sing a little song. I challenge you to go out in to the community and do 1 or 2 random acts of KINDNESS and meet me at the MSU Federal Credit Union Headquarters on May 7th. More details to follow. We will be given a check for my classmate and hopefully a Panther win for $1000 for our school.

Here are a few more photos from my NYC trip. Please follow me on Instagram, that’s where all the fun happens! My Instagram is Kanin Elizabeth.

Thank you for following my dream,

Rise up

In February, I found out that my vocal coach was having surgery to remove cancer from his mouth. I don’t know all of the technical terms but what I do know is that he is not teaching right now. February 15th was my last lesson. We knew the date was approaching and we thought he would only be out for a few weeks.

When I was in LA, I was given really good advise. I was also given goals that I was suppose to achieve in the next two years. The first thing was to start dreaming out-loud. I shared how this is really hard for me. I can check that off my list. As you know, when we came back from Hawaii I started: Facebook, My Blog & Instagram.

The next goal, was to start songwriting. One of the agents that I met with, told me I needed to start writing my own songs. Believe it or not it is very difficult to find songs that are clean enough for me to sing. I do my best. On February 15th, Mr. Gregg told me it was time to get a hook book. A hook book is a place that song writers write down their lyrics and start to create their stories. Gregg is a Songwriter and travels to Nashville.IMG_0377

It’s funny, my parents left February 16th for Key West with our neighbors/friends. While they were in the Keys, they went on a fishing trip. The Captain owned the fishing charter and they were lucky enough to have him that day. He shared a ton of stories. Billy Currington had produced one of his music videos on his boat in Key West. He also mentioned that one of his closest friends was Dallas Davidson . He is the best songwriter in the country. For those of you that know my Mom, how hard do you think it was for her not to mention ME???? Click on his last name to see his work.

So, I might be set back a little bit on that goal as I have not been able to work with Mr. Gregg sense February 15th but I was also suppose to start piano. I did February 1st. I keep singing. I am singing songs to raise money for Mr. Gregg. He will probably be out for sometime. Teaching vocal and guitar is what he does. I am doing my best to sing for dollars to help him out. Thank you to all that have supported me.

One of my other goals came this week unexpectedly. I officially signed with two agencies in NYC. I will be going to New York in April for my photo shoot. But for now, you can see me here, FUTURE FACES NYC. They work with labels like H & M, GUESS, MARC JACOB etc…I will not be up on the other site until I visit New York. THIS IS VERY EXCITING NEWS. I will share my whole NYC trip in my next blog. Wish me luck.

As difficult as the month has been, I will still rise up and continue to be my best self. I really feel that my voice is a gift and if I can use it to help Mr. Gregg, I am happy to do so. He has been wonderful to me and my family.

I started singing before I could talk, humming actually. My passion for singing has been a secret. I have only shared my voice with a few family members and close friends ( like two really- Avery & Holly ). My third and fourth grade music teacher had no idea I could sing. When I was nine years old I attended a week long camp at the Wharton Center in East Lansing with Paul Canaan from the Broadway Show, Kinky Boots. Paul offers an amazing camp that introduces all ages to the Arts and allows you to sing, act and dance with amazing artist from around the country. At the end of the week they offer head shots and for the past two years I have worked with the amazing photographer from NYC.  His name is Curtis from CURTIS & CORT. He mentioned to my parents that I should consider modeling as a way to save for college. When they came back the second year, he asked if we had reached out to any agencies. This was just never anything we considered. We ended up having a few SKYPE sessions with a few people over the summer in California but nothing really worked out as I was in Michigan and we were fine with that. I have never considered myself a model. I love to sing.
My Mom has a friend, a wonderful friend. Miss Andrea is a handbag designer, her company is Be Brilliant. She is beautiful img_0305and very well connected. Miss Andrea has spent a career as a journalist and has even worked for People Magazine. Sometimes I go to lunch with my Mom and Miss Andrea. She is super fun to listen to. Miss Andrea suggested reaching out to someone she knew in California to get some advice. I think my poor Mom flopped. We know absolutely nothing about this business and we had no idea what to even ask her. I think they exchanged a few emails but again she really had no idea what to ask. We even had a girl from our home town move to Hollywood/LA and she ended up not even following up with us. The one thing you should know about my Mom, she’s like a private investigator. She will do the research if it is something she wants to know about. The challenge is, we don’t know what we want to know or do. We do know we have questions. This is my sport. All of my friends play soccer, softball, basketball and swim (I also love to swim) but I sing..every day, 7 days a week.
The one piece of advice Miss Andrea’s friend did give us was if you go out to LA, you need to have a plan. We talked to people that had been in LA for years and had never had an opportunity to sit in front of an agent or a director. During the Summer I started auditioning via SKYPE and I was invited to come out to LA. I had the opprotunity to sing, model and act in front of several agents and directors. So before we went to Hawaii we spent 5 days in LA.
This is where my story begins. I hope you will follow along. This is going to be a journey. I was given four goals this year. The first one is to DREAM OUT LOUD. I have to share my dream with others which includes my voice. One piece of advice they gave me, was that I had to start social media. This frightens my MOM. Honestly, I wish all of my friends could have taken the social media class that I took. It was a good lesson for all of my years to come and don’t worry my Mom is monitoring every word. My Dad said that he wished all of the athletes that he follows would have went through this social media class before they started sharing all of their “dirty laundry” with the world on Facebook. If you would like to follow along, I am on Instagram and Facebook  link to Facebook as Kanin Elizabeth (Instagram @kaninelizabeth). All of my information will be inspirational and positive. If you know of any young people also needing encouragement or would like support living out their dreams, please share my contact information. If you are hoping to one day go to Hollywood, you will benefit greatly from my blog. It was a lot of work. We planned for about three months before we went to CA and had to prepare a lot of materials.
You may be surprised with the outcome or the path that I choose. I am undecided. This will truly be a step by step process to persuing my passion.
It is really hard for me to share my story. I am very quiet and shy but this is my dream and I am willing to give it everything I have. So I am just going to be positive and dream out loud.
